The Stories:
Each chapter is threaded with poignant stories, metaphors, and personal examples. Pete Grieg is a master at weaving these things together. The content leaves yous hungering to pray.

The Resources:
Ane of the aspects of the book I dear information technology's the boosted resource. Most chapters correspond with a video from The Prayer Course (PrayerCourse.org), and throughout the volume are references to the Tool Shed, a listing of short articles institute on that website, that give practical insight into a number of aspects of prayer, from lectio divina, to tongues, to parenting every bit prayer, to Warfare Prayer. I appreciate the thoroughness of this approach without making the book likewise long and complicated. One or two great books are recommended at the terminate of each chapter for farther exploration.

I really appreciate what Pete Grieg has put together. I adore the humility, artlessness, and sense of humour with which he writes. And I capeesh his counterbalanced encouragements and exhortations to the various theological "camps". He's declaring the necessity of Scripture in one sentence, rebuking an overly academic approach to the Bible in the adjacent; exhorting is to motility across "passive openness" to God speaking today, but rebuking those who obsess over miraculous manifestations without advisable Biblical grounding or to the exclusion of valuing God'due south guidance through (eg) common sense.

To the open center, this book will leave yous desiring to live a more than prayerful life.

Practical, useful, and most importantly, doable.

I'thousand surely in no position to make a ranking of the best books virtually prayer, but I can say this is probably the nigh useful one I have read. A book that actually inspires activeness, rather than making prayer seem and so backbreaking and complicated that it would exist all-time left to saints and mystics.

Highly recommended!

I read this book with the Renovaré book club. And I'm glad I did. How To Pray was simple, profound, and refreshing. Regardless of where you are at in your prayer life there is something for you. Summary: Good intro to prayer using the acronym PRAY: Break, Rejoice, Enquire, Yield.

Pete Greig is the founder of the 24/7 prayer movement. As a movement that has been around for over 20 years and replicated all effectually the world. In an interview with the Renovaré Book Social club, Greig said that he finally feels capable of writing this type of volume after writing several previous books on thwarting with God, unanswered prayer, and facing his married woman'south cancer.

I have had both positive and negative interactions with forms of the 24/7 prayer movement. Aspects take God's power seriously, and devotion and parts seem to focus on thinking nearly prayer in ways that seem more akin to magic. In that location also elements of the 24/17 motility that dabble in Dominanist theology and are more like Christian Nationalists than I am comfy with.

That existence said, I did not see the negative aspects of 24/7 prayer in this book, although I would not take phrased some parts of prayer as he did. I am a real believer in the importance and ability of prayer, even if I am reluctant around many abuses of prayer. The point of prayer for me is a human relationship with God. To focus on power of prayer places the result of a relationship before the relationship. Information technology is non the same, simply information technology feels related to sex outside of matrimony. Sexual practice is designed for marriage as a bonding agent and procreation. But sex exterior of marriage changes the purpose and instrumentalizes sex to distort the relationship over the long term.

In a not dissimilar style, focus on prayer and the use of prayer outside of the relationship with God orients prayer toward what nosotros tin get from God. Many talk nearly the lack of miracles as primarily about a lack of faith or a event of secularism and disbelief of the possibility of miracles. While I don't want to dismiss that concern, I recollect the more significant trouble may exist a civilization of viewing relationships more through the lens of utility and instrumentality than through the idea of the good of the relationship in and of itself.

All of that to say, the primary purpose presented hither is prayer as relationship edifice. The rest of prayer is an outgrowth of that. Pete Greig tells good stories and creates a sense of possibility with prayer. And for me, the biggest test of the quality of a book about prayer is whether it encourages me really to pray. This volume did.

As office of prayer exploration, he covers nine types of prayer: Centering, Admiration, Petition, Intercession, Listening, Confession, and Spiritual Warfare. I am for exploring prayer and thinking about it well, merely prayer will ever be more well-nigh learning past doing more learning through theory and academics. How to Pray is practically focused and helpful in means that I call up that prayer books should be. Information technology is piece of cake to read about prayer and non pray. All the same, at that place are many useful suggestions here and many online tools referenced if you want to go into more depth on particular involvement topics.

'There doesn't have to be anything insincere about 'going through the motions' when those motions express something nosotros cannot say.'

2021 has started out with me reading a lot of books on faith, and Pete Greig's How to Pray is no exception, although information technology does say in the championship that it's 'A Simple Guide for Normal People' so I went into the book expecting it to be introductory at all-time to the topic of prayer, which I haven't explored much in my ain life. In that respect, I wasn't disappointed, merely I wasn't specially impressed either. Greig's structured his argument well, with each chapter of the book dedicated to a different facet of prayer, ending with a instance study of someone who used prayer in their own life. Additionally, there are plenty of quotes relevant to the chapter at mitt, and Greig is comfortable referring to other works to support his points.

At i point, Greig references "Paul'due south command to uphold our political leaders in prayer." I wonder what does this hateful for political leaders such equally Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump? The latter of whom is thankfully no longer a problem. Should people who pray be wanting them to be successful policy wise? Even if those policies are harmful? If so, why? Greig then goes on to mention the Lord's Prayer specifically - "That'southward why, in the Lord's Prayer, Jesus doesn't merely instruct us to pray personally for daily bread, but as well for regime change: the coming of God'due south Kingdom on World." But what exactly is God's Kingdom on Earth? How would it look and work as a political arrangement? The book doesn't actually answer nor deeply explore these questions, because information technology's beyond its telescopic, which I understand. Information technology makes How to Pray a peachy introductory volume for the topic, and Greig refers to farther reading at the stop of each chapter which I appreciate, but I doubt any of those books will answer the questions I have either. My starting time exploration of this subject has left me with more questions than answers.

I didn't detect the writing mode partciularly convincing either. Greig frequently references weird coincidences that but don't seem realistic, such as grouping dreams, weird feelings and mass prayer resulting in the intended outcome. These signs and symbols litter the volume, to the point of disbelief. I have never had a stranger arroyo me with a vision, but peradventure I am surrounding myself with the incorrect sort of people. Greig's faith seems very receptive of symbols compared to other Christians - such every bit his congregation believing that a shared dream is a message from God, which informs his argument and writing. He frequently uses anecdotes to support his otherwise well structured argument - but manifestly all of his testify is wildly subjective.

I think How to Pray is a well written book that gives a detailed overview to the subject of prayer, with recommendations for further reading, only it remains express in scope and suffers from a unconvicing narrative voice that doesn't uphold its great construction.
